Graphical layout, navigation, getting the students' attention

2. Features of the interface

Having previously stated the interface of the project will not last forever, and that it can be adapted at all times, serious consideration was nonetheless given to creating a simple, yet elegant and efficient layout for the interface of the i-Structures project.

First and foremost, it is essential that the course site follow fundamental principles of web browsing:

  • The course material is presented following a “slide” approach: pages should normally not require scrolling when viewed in a window 800 x 600 pixel in size. Exceptions are possible occasionally, but authors should strive to avoid them. This rule is not applicable to web questionnaires such as those used for the self-evaluation sections.
  • The user is free to set the size of his navigation window. The layout of the site is designed so that navigation with a small screen size (~800x600) is possible. Smaller screen or window sizes will require some scrolling, but navigation will remain possible.
  • The user is also free to select alternate font sizes when using the site. Imperfections of the layout may become large when using very large font sizes, but the navigation will still be operational.
  • The user is free, and indeed encouraged to use standard web navigation practices in the process of following the course. This includes the use of bookmarks and the creation of “shortcut” web pages pointing to particularly pertinent material. This means that the use of frames is absolutely prohibited for the course. Exceptions are possible, but their use must be explained and documented.

Why is this very page so long, if you say that we should have no scrolling?

(1) Because of Murphy’s law

(2) Because the above list is too long

(3) Because the author wanted it so
